Arlan Melendez Elected as NCAI West Regional Vice President
During the 70th National Congress of American Indians convention, Arlan D. Melendez, tribal chairman of the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, was elected as the West Regional Vice-President.
The convention was held October 13 – 18 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
“I am happy to be part of the leadership of NCAI,” Melendez said. “I will be disseminating information about national issues to the membership and communicating issues from our area to other leaders.”
The west regional covers Arizona, Utah, and Nevada, and for Melendez it’s the third time he has been elected to the position. He also serves as the NCAI taxation subcommittee.
Melendez has served as the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony for more than 22-years of uninterrupted leadership. A feat that is exceptional in Indian country as are the appointments to federal, state, and tribal government posts.
Melendez graduated from Truckee Meadows Community College and attended the University of Nevada. He served as a member of the United States Commission on Civil Rights. He also served in the United States Marine, and was enlisted during the Vietnam Era and still serves as a Selective Service local board member.
