Cale Ware: Rising Star in Arena Football

For many youth throughout the country, chasing the so-called "gridiron glory" may begin in middle school, or even in the Pop Warner leagues. But for Cale Ware, a Kiowa and Comanche football player, that pursuit started in youth football at the tender age of four.

“From the first time he touched a football, I knew what kind of player [Cale] was going to be,” said Tim Ware, his father. Tim knew that his son would be passionate about playing football. Nineteen years later, and still passionate about the game, his son recently signed with the New Mexico Stars, and indoor football team in the Lone Star Football League.

Ware, now 23, was a varsity middle linebacker through all four years of high school. “The first time I started varsity as a freshman--that would probably be the main point that stood out for me,” Ware said about his high school days. “Then, our senior year, we finally had a winning season and put it all together.”

At Haskell Indian Nations University, Ware started at linebacker for three seasons. His coach at Haskell, Mario Torres, was impressed with how he played the game.

“As a player, his size, speed and explosiveness were top notch,” said Torres. “I knew from when I first saw him as a freshman--if this guy takes the weight room serious and his coaching serious, he can do some really good things. Obviously, it’s coming true.”

Now that he will begin play with the Stars, Ware’s goals are to “be in the best shape I can be,” he said. “Go in as a rookie and be a good teammate to everybody and get used to the atmosphere out there. That’s mainly my goal.”

The Stars are based in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, which is a suburb of Albuquerque. Ware said that he’s excited to be around the tribes in New Mexico.

“I want to get out there and reach out to them,” Ware said. “Show them an Indian at any level can make it. Whether it’s high school, college or pros. If you just put your heart and mind to it, you can make it. Just like me.”
