Citizen Potawatomi to Improve Self-Governance Today at Ceremony
Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, along with Assistant Secretary – Indian Affairs Kevin Washburn will be participating in a signing ceremony in Shawnee, Oklahoma today that should improve economic development for the Citizen Potawatomi Nation.
Joining Jewell and Washburn at the ceremony will be Chairman John Barrett of the Potawatomi Nation as the approve the tribe’s leasing regulations in accordance with the HEARTH Act according to a Department of the Interior release.
The goal of the HEARTH Act is to “restore the authority of federally recognized American Indian tribes to control the leasing of their trust lands, thereby promoting self-determination and economic development.”
Others looking to be in attendance will be Rep. Tom Cole; Potawatomi Vice Chairman Linda Capps; and other tribal members.
This is Jewell’s first trip to Oklahoma since becoming Secretary of the Interior. The Potawatomi, upon the signing, will become one of the first tribes to benefit from President Barack Obama’s HEARTH ACT which was signed last year in an effort to empower all tribal nations.
The ceremony will take place at the Potawatomi National Cultural Heritage Center at 10: 45 EST.
