President Obama Announces Key Administration Post for Cherokee Citizen
On November 22, President Barack Obama announced his intent to appoint eight individuals to key administration posts, one of them was Brad R. Carson, Cherokee, as the Under Secretary of the Army in the Department of Defense.
“I am pleased to announce that these experienced and committed individuals have agreed to join this Administration, and I look forward to working with them in the months and years ahead,” Obama said following the announcement.
According to a White House press release, Carson has been the General Counsel of the Department of the Army at the DOD since 2012. Prior to the DOD position, he was a professor of Business Law at the University of Tulsa. While there he had joint appointment in the College of Law and the College of Business from 2009 to 2012. He was director of the National Energy Policy Institute at the University of Tulsa from 2010 to 2012.
The military veteran saw active duty as a U.S. Navy officer deployed in Iraq. He was a member of the Army’s 84th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Battalion from 2008 to 2009. For his service he received the “Bronze Star as an intelligence officer working with EOD teams at seven bases investigating bomb sites, caches, smuggling routes and other activities related to improvised explosive devices,” according to the Office of the Army General Counsel website.
In 2009 and 2010, Carson served as Chief Executive Officer of the Cherokee Nation Businesses, LLC. He was a fellow at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 2005.
Carson also represented the 2nd District of Oklahoma in the United States House of Representatives from 2000 to 2005. Carson practiced commercial law at Crowe & Dunlevy P.C.
Carson has a B.A. from Baylor University, where he graduated with honors and was selected as a Rhodes Scholar; an M.A. from Trinity College at Oxford University; and a J.D. from the University of Oklahoma College of Law.
