Listen to Powerful Sounds From the 2nd Gichi Manidoo Giizis Powwow
The Black Bear Casino Resort in Carlton, Minnesota opened its doors to the 2nd Annual Gichi Manidoo Giizis Traditional Powwow on Saturday. Taking care of the land and community was an important message to pow wow goers and its purpose was to bring community members together with federal, tribal, and state organizations to learn how to best take care of the land and community resources.
The Thirteen Moons program, which sponsored the pow wow, is a Fond du Lac Tribal College Extension program with the Fond du Lac Band of Lake SuperiorChippewa and is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture - NIFA funds.
More than 300 dancers registered for the event and nearly 1,500 people attended the pow wow led by Murphy Thomas, MC; Les Gibbs, Arena Director; MA’IIN’ GAN, Host Drum; and Bill and Edye Howes, as head dancers. There were also Moccasin Games and a 50/50 raffle.
ICTMN was unable to attend, but here’s a clip of Big Red Drum Group singing a powerful song.
