Grants Available for Tribal Economic Development and Mineral Resources

The Tribal Energy Program on January 7 announced two grant proposal opportunities for Indian tribes and Alaska Native regional and village corporations that would aid in economic development on Indian lands.

The funding opportunities were made available through the United States Department of the Interior’s Office of Indian Energy and Economic Development (IEED) and were announced December 23 by Kevin K. Washburn, Assistant Secretary – Indian Affairs.

The Tribal Energy Development Capacity-Building Grant (TEDC) will “help tribes in assessing, developing, or obtaining the managerial and technical capacity needed to develop energy resources on Indian land and properly account for energy resource production and revenue, as provided for under Title V. Section 503 of the Energy Policy Act of 2005,” according to a DOI press release.

The TEDC grants intentions are to help eligible entities meet goals regarding energy resources they intend to develop, or are developing, on Indian land. A full list of the goals can be found here.

Proposals may be mailed or hand-delivered to the Department of the Interior, Office of Indian Energy and Economic Development, Attention: Ashley Stockdale, 1951 Constitution Ave., N.W., MS-20-MIB, Washington, D.C. 20240, or emailed to Ashley Stockdale at

Grants will be for “projects that explore for energy and mineral resources, inventory or assess known resources, or perform feasibility or market studies about the use and development of known energy and mineral resources on Indian lands,” according to the release.
