At the 2014 Juno Awards ceremonies, which took place over the weekend in in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the DJ collective A Tribe Called Red was named Breakthrough Group of the Year, and Surrender by singer-songwriter George Leach captured Aboriginal Album of the Year honors. The Juno Awards are given to recognize the best in Canadian music, and are Canada's equivalent of the Grammys.

The Breakthrough Group of the Year award was one of six handed out on Sunday, putting A Tribe Called Red in the spotlight with Canadian artists who are household names: Tegan and Sara, Justin Bieber, Serena Ryder and Arcade Fire. The group's Facebook page and Twitter feed were flooded with words of congratulation from fans and fellow artists. Journalist and rapper Wab Kinew shared this poignant observation:

So happy for Tribe to win Breakout artist! To out it in perspective even Buffy St Marie hasn't won a Juno in a mainstream category. And she won an Oscar. This is BIG, both for the boys but also for the country!
