Video: AIM's ‘Chief Wahoo’ Protest Fights Fans' Backlash

4/7/14

The protest against the Cleveland Indians’ logo, Chief Wahoo, continued in Cleveland yesterday and was captured in a 26-minute video.

At Progressive Field during the Indians’ third home game against the Minnesota Twins, protestors chanted, “Change the name, change the logo” to fans entering the stadium in a video that was posted on April 6 to YouTube. One Cleveland fan, walked in the ballpark chanting back at the protestors, saying “keep the name, keep the logo.” The words “keep the Chief” were written on his shirt.

Other fans, who were against changing the logo, booed at the protestor as they walked around the stadium and held up signs that said “Racism is a Cleveland Tradition” and “Respect people and retire the logo.”

A few minutes into the video, two Cleveland fans walked through the protest line carrying a large sign with a picture of Chief Wahoo, which read “Save the Chief” in red, capital letters.

“For 40 years now our people have been out here protesting this racist image,” said a protestor who identified himself as Vernon Bellecourt’s grandson. “This image that takes our culture, our religious symbols, such as the eagle feather, and degrades them down and degrades us down to a mere cartoon.”

This video appears to be separate from the “It’s not racist” incident that occurred on April 4. ICTMN reported on the offensive event, which you can read here.

It's good to see other minorities helping our cause. We have to remember that the main reason Whites are so up in arms is that THEY are now the minority and they're afraid that they'll be treated the same way THEY'VE always treated minorities. We need to reach out to the young. Once the young see how this is racist they will change it while the old, sports fans will simply die away.

Euro-americans will always justify their actions against Tribal people as long as this country remains. Because, if this country does admit the truth then they will be admitting to the murder and atrocities committed against the Tribal people of this country. THAT WILL NEVER happen! How can the great USA EVER admit anything they have ever done to any one unjustly? How will they ever admit that a persons life is worth more than gold? How will they ever admit to the lies they told and the deceit that was used to STEAL our land? One thing euro-american people better take to heart! Even their Bible says it, "You reap what you sow!" The reaping has already begun. Mother Earth has had enough rape and abuse and destruction from the greedy euro-americans and she is fighting back. Floods, earthquakes, tornado's, etc, etc! And it will only get worse. Then, they will fight a battle that they cannot win and it will cost them billions. And it's all their fault! They created this mess! They will call on the Creator to rescue them, and He won't! He will laugh. Americans are the most entertained people on earth. It boggles my mind to know that they will protect their right to mock a people rather than to have any kind of empathy. But, as i rethink history, it's the same old thing but without the killing; OH, WAIT, that's still going on too. "Only when the last tree is cut down; only when the last river has been poisoned; Only when the last fish has been caught; Only then will you (the euro-americans) find that money cannot be eaten." The only thing the euro-american understands is “money.” When we can come up with a strategy that will cost the Cleveland, Washington and other racist organizations more money by keeping the logos…THEN the fight will be won! Steve Fire Heart, Cherokee ancestry and proud of it!

I never justified any action or actions that took place prior to me being born. I also never justified anything, I was not with in 25'-30' of. Meaning I could stop it if need be. Or die trying.

Ok Look at the problem here. Native people will get no respect because we feed into ourselves. Look at this group that was presented on here. "A tribe called Red" https://indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com/2014/04/09/music-video-will-take-tribe-called-red-next-level-154392#comment-2148615. Also about a untalented singer who I am not sure is enrolled in any tribe by the name of "Martha Red-Bone". What is this? Native people or people who claim to be native must stop feeding into these stereotypes themselves. If it's offensive then why are these people using it and not getting any flack??? They are helping to promote the very stereotype Indian people are crying about and you wonder why we are politically weak and no one takes us seriously. Dam hypocrites. All of you.
