Video: The Faces of the Gathering of Nations Pow Wow
Amidst the crowds, the colors, the drums, and the fancy footwork of dancers young and old, there were also the smiling faces.
The Gathering of Nations Pow Wow is the granddaddy of all pow wows, with thousands of dancers, over $200,000 in prize money awarded, and contests for the “Longest Hair” and “Canada versus US Jingle.” This year’s newest contest category was prizes for "Golden Age" dancers.
On Stage 49, thirty-two acts took the stage, performing everything from reggae to hip hop; hard rock to Native flute. In “The Pit,” the University of New Mexico’s arena, activities went on until all hours, with Smoke Dancers coming out at midnight!
Education was a theme throughout, supported by contests and materials distributed for healthy eating, though there was no shortage of fry bread in the house.
But don’t feel bad if you missed it this year's GON. Powwows.com and Gathering of Nations contributed video clips for the video below. And for a trip down Memory Lane, visit GON’s archives, beginning with photos of the first event in 1983!
See you next year!
