UAlbany's Thompson Trio Upsets Loyola, Advances to Quarterfinals

On May 10, the University of Albany’s Lyle, Miles and Ty Thompson – the dexterous Native American lacrosse trio – scored 11 of the team’s 13 goals against Loyola University (Md.) during the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Baltimore.

The Great Danes defeated the No. 3 seeded Greyhounds 13-6. It was the Greyhounds’ second loss of the season, ending a 15-game winning streak.

Lyle, Onondaga, emerged with three goals and five assists and broke the NCAA record with his 115th point of the season, reported Times Union. Miles, his brother, scored five goals and had two assists. Their cousin, Ty, Mohawk, topped it off with a hat trick.

Lyle is the top scorer in Division I lacrosse with 45 goals and 69 assists for 115 points, according to Times Union. The junior attackman is the first player in Division I history with two 100-point seasons. Miles, who’s a senior, leads the nation with 74 goals and 108 points.

Brothers Lyle and Miles have been selected as finalists for the Tewaaraton Award. Tewaaraton is the Mohawk word for lacrosse. A Native American player has never won the Tewaaraton.

“I’m just ecstatic for Miles and Lyle to be named among the top five players in the country and to represent their people in their game of lacrosse," UAlbany coach Scott Marr, who is on the Tewaaraton committee, told Times Union.

The other three finalists are Duke’s Jordan Wolf, Loyola’s defenseman Joe Fletcher, and Princeton’s midfielder Tom Schreiber. The trophy is given annually to the top player in college lacrosse. It will be awarded May 29.

The Great Danes advance to the quarterfinal round for the second time in program history. They’re slated to face sixth-seeded Notre Dame, which won 13-5 over Harvard, reported USA Today.

Loyola finished out the season at 15-2.
