10 Things You Will Definitely Find In a Native’s Home

Vincent Schilling

Considering our home is our resting place, a sacred environment that keeps out the troubles of the world, helps us find solace at the end of a tough day – and – a place to store our junk… I mean, sacred objects.

Considering our homes are often filled to the brim with things we just haven’t been able to let go of over the years, we find it now appropriate to create this list: 10 Things you will definitely find In a Native’s Home

Sorry if we are giving away any secrets. By the way, that laundry is piling up, are you waiting for a special occasion?

Old Regalia

Whether it just doesn’t fit anymore or needs a bit of repair, we know you have some in the old closet no one really uses. Nothing to be ashamed of, but it’s not like we can just let it go or anything.

Along with those eagle pictures, add anything with a buffalo, wolf, historical pictures of famous chiefs, etc. Also, having turquoise jewelry, things with bear claws or some sort of NDN themed jewelry. We DO love that native jewelry!

Nice way to essentialize us as a people and a race, Vincent Schilling. How about a series of these? "The Ten Things You Find in the Homes of Italian People!" 1.) Spaghetti! 2.) Gelatto! 3.) Opera CDs! I know plenty of Native people who don't have a single one of these items in their home. I also know plenty of members of the Wannabe tribe who do. How can we expect people to take us as a people seriously...to avoid using racist t-shirts, mascots, use Navajo designs on flasks and hipster underwear...if we feed into these stereotypes ourselves?

I'm Apache so no snake-skin or bear claws for me. I've got everything on this list, but regalia. I'm in New Mexico so yeah, there's a lot of turquoise around here along with a couple of corn husk dolls.

ewhitewolf1, I thought about what you had to say & I wondered why you felt we were stereotyping ourselves just because some of our peoples are very proud of our heritages that we want the whole world to know we have that native pride! I am not ashamed one little bit of all the things we have in our home that shows visitors we are a proud First Nations family. We wear clothes sometimes that says, "Native Pride", we love that jewelry that shows who we are, some of us love wearing native themed clothing every day of the year, etc. If that all means we are stereotyping ourselves then so be it! Every single person of native heritage SHOULD let the whole world know just who WE are! ......................................................................................................................... No more cowering & acting like white society says................No more dressing like anyone other than who WE are as tribal nations people...........No more talking like any other society around us BUT our own! Don't be oppressed by these land thieves another minute of you life! Be proud of your tribal heritage & thankful to the Creator for the blessings he gives each of us to serve Him, sharing His wisdom, compassion & caring with each person that comes into our lives. ......................................................................................................................... Forget the white man's suits, ties, dress shoes, etc. Don't hide who your People are & where your ancestors came from! I never get so sick of seeing our many peoples cutting their hair & wearing the white man's clothes, listening to music of cultures that are not our own. So many of our people seem to want to do everything that denies who their people are. We have been educated in the white man's world to use their own system & laws against them; NOT emulate them in dress, speech & behavior! ......................................................................................................................... Empower each member of your family to be proud of their heritage being the best they can be & show those around you that you are second to none! ......................................................................................................................... Native family & PROUD of it 24/7/365!

ewhitewolf1 - Humor. There's a certain amount of tongue firmly in cheek, it seems to me.
