Native History: Descendants Remember Battle of Little Big Horn

This Date in Native History: Representatives from many Native nations of the Plains will come together today for the 138th anniversary of the Battle of Little Big Horn, where a re-dedication ceremony of the newly completed Indian Memorial will take place. Doug Bissonette, the Pine Ridge spokesman for the family of Crazy Horse, said the Big Horn Riders will arrive from Pine Ridge in two groups of 20, “as they do each year in memory of the battle.” Northern Cheyenne youth, whose ancestors fought at Little Big Horn, will also participate with a run to honor them.

Lakota historian and author Donovin Sprague said, “The purpose of the Indian Memorial is to honor American Indian people whose names were often not included.” Sprague is a descendant of Crazy Horse, High Backbone (Hump), and other battle participants.

The Indian Memorial represents warrior-descendants of the battle from 17 tribes throughout the Northern Plains and Oklahoma. Engravings, artwork and imagery honor Native participants who fought and died in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The theme is “Peace Through Unity.”

This iron memorial was designed by Oglala artist Colleen Cutshall. It “has helped to re-image the place as hallowed ground for Indians as well as whites,” according to the National Park Service. (Donovin Sprague)

Peace through unity was echoed by Traditional Chief Phillip Whiteman, Northern Cheyenne, who said, “My great-grandparents were chiefs and warriors at Little Big Horn and we carry this message to the future generations. Days before the battle, my ancestors were summoned to Medicine Deer Rock, which is a portal to a higher dimension. Sitting Bull had a vision there of soldiers falling into the camp like locusts. That vision, that dream, has propelled us forward to where we are today. Medicine Deer Rock reminds us that the old formula of resistance, of being against something, is over now. That whole thought process is over. We have to stand up for what we are for, not against,” Whiteman said.

“Our ancestors were given a clear message. In order for our two-legged to exist together collectively, we have to walk in peace, balance and harmony for all living things. Air, land, water, language, and culture are all one and the same. Today we have the opportunity to return to that oneness. The Battle of Little Big Horn is part of the paradigm shift—it is part of the bigger vision of what our ancestors came together for at Rosebud Creek, near the Medicine Deer Rock: of learning to fight not to fight.”

On June 6, 1876, a Sun Dance was held at Rosebud Creek near Medicine Deer Rock. Somewhere between 6,000 and 10,000 people had come together from different tribes. Chief John Grass, Hunkpapa Lakota, reported that Crazy Horse was there, and Sitting Bull was singing and “making himself holy.” They knew from the vision that Custer was coming, and they were prepared. “We had scouts for many days watching Custer and Crook,” Grass said in a testimony he gave Colonel Welch in 1915.

Grass said that close to 600 men left a trail for Custer to find. “Custer never knew about this part of our march, but he should have known,” Grass said.

Sadly, Little Bighorn was the beginning of the end for the plains tribes. As Custer's wife continued his "legacy" of a great General for fighting off bloodthirsty savages, her stories were passed off as truth, and Native history tells the rest. __________________________________________________________ Had more people known about the women and children at the Washita River Custer might never have made it to the Little Bighorn. The "Peter Principle" can have disastrous effects when the incompetent is a military commander.

My ancestors were there and fought gallantly to defend their families and way of life. I take umberrage at the reference by the person commenting, that it was the "beginning of the end" of our Plains tribes. We are still here, today and into the future. We were not "conquered", beaten or annihilated, we negotiated Treaties. Most of those treaties have never been honored, and that is because we dealt with a dishonorable government, but they are still treaties nevertheless. the reason we maintain sovereign status, are those treaties, and that is the only remnant of honor that the U.S. retains to this day. We are still a dynamic, viable and relevant people. We may not have the population numbers of past decades or the political clout of other ethnicities, but WE ARE STILL HERE.

You can take umbrage if you must, Sonny Skyhawk, but I didn't mean that the plains tribes were decimated completely, just that the Little Bighorn was the beginning to the end of life for the plains tribes as they knew it. _____________________________________________________ I just finished reading "The Sun Dance People" by Richard Erdoes and he (the author) also draws the same parallel. It was the battle of the Little Bighorn that made White America realize that it wasn't necessary to chase the plains tribes all over the midwest to beat them into submission. __________________________________ "The Buffalo hunters have done more in the last two years to settle the vexed Indian Question than the entire regular army in the last thirty years. They are destroying the Indian's commissary." General Philip Sheridan _________________________________ In 1830 an estimated 75 million buffalo roamed the Great Plains. In 1850 there were still 50 million left. By 1883 there were none to be found. Thankfully, some buffalo were herded north by the Sioux and some buffalo were hidden in Canada by our northern cousins there. It is from these few buffalo that the herds are currently being replenished. __________________________________ I have the utmost respect for all of the Plains tribes, but you can't deny that the Little Bighorn was the beginning of the end for the way of life of the Sioux, the Crow, the Cheyenne and several other tribes. There were no more buffalo, White man encroached upon the territory with settlers and gold miners and tribes were relegated to small plots of land that (at the time) they were forbidden to leave. That they maintained their culture, their language and their stories shows the true resilience of the Native spirit.
