And the ESPY Goes to ... Lyle Thompson? Onondaga Lacrosse Star Nominated!
Nominees for the 2014 ESPY Awards have been announced, and Onondaga lacrosse player Lyle Thompson is among the five candidates for Male College Athlete of the Year.
The category shows admirable breadth, pulling in not just a lacrosse player but also a hockey player and a wrestler—two other college sports you don't see on TV all that often. You might have heard of the other two guys in the running, though: Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston (football) and Naismith Award winner Doug McDermott (basketball), who finished his career in fifth place on the all-time NCAA scoring list.
Lyle Thompson, who has just finished his junior year at the University of Albany, shared college lacrosse's top honor, the Tewaaraton Trophy, with his brother Miles. Both of them exceeded the previous record for points in a season, which was 114; Lyle finished with 128 (51 goals and 77 assists) and Miles, a senior, finished with 119 (82 goals, 37 assists).
ESPY Award voting is open, and will remain so through July 16. To cast your ballot, visit the Official ESPYs site.
