10 Ways to Show Your Native Pride

ICTMN Staff
6/28/14

You're Native -- and most people aren't. That's something to be proud of. If you're looking for some ways to show your Native pride -- and share your Native culture -- here are 10 ideas that might help.

1. Learn Your Language

Nothing quite connects you to your heritage like speaking the way your ancestors did. The English language, after all, is an imposition of colonialism and (we can admit) necessary to get along in this world -- we need it to buy groceries, pay our taxes, tell the doctor where it hurts. But that, in a way, makes Native language all the more special: Feeling it on the tongue, letting it loose in conversation, writing it on the page -- it's an act and an activity that is a pure transaction with something so many people are content to let go.

2. Make a Statement

There's something completely superficial to a t-shirt -- and yet there is an art to the sloganeering. Think of today's Native t-shirt artists as Native Mad Men: They're bringing a message to the masses that needs to make its impact in seconds. It may be ironic, it may be humorous, it may be in-your-face, but it has to be clear. Deejay NDN of A Tribe Called Red caused controversy with his "Caucasians" t-shirt -- he also caused some people to think again about the Cleveland Indians mascot. (He also gave the t-shirt-makers more business than they could handle.) Check out our selection of t-shirts with attitude to get an idea of the kind of message you can promote just walking down the street.

Here in KKKanada we have what are called Friendship Centers in most major cities and even some smaller places where Natives can get together to socialize and to access resources and services.

GREAT LIST! You could easily accomplish two of these things by visiting my T-shirt artist friend SABA. He makes the coolest t-shirts and is an accomplished artist. He's also Native. You can find his work here http://sabahut.com/graphic-design/t-shirts/

A way to show your Native Pride besides what I saw listed would be to wear that Native-themed jewelry, custom-made clothes with the symbols of OUR cultures on it. These things are sure to get comments or get questions asked to you I have found. It always gives me an opportunity to share OUR story & culture with those who don't really know anything other than what those white school books tell. So far I find those who are not of OUR People to be positive for the most part & think it is "cool" as I hear folks say when they hear why we wear some of the things we do out & about promoting OUR culture. ......................................................................................................................... We don't have to hide who WE are as a People any longer & no one can do a thing to us for wearing those native-themed items & clothes. It's not just for show, but is who WE are as a People. ......................................................................................................................... It is a joy when I am out & about in Indian Country seeing our People wear those Native Pride clothing items; especially the small ones! So folks, don't hide, stand up & stand out & shout it out! Native & PROUD to be of the People!
