Actor and comedian Jim Carrey's recent commencement speech at Maharishi University of Management was peppered with his characteristic wit and spiritual insight. But it's his jab at Monsanto that is garnering attention across social media.

"I'm here to plant a seed today...a seed that will inspire you to go forward in your life with enthusiastic hearts and a clear sense of wholeness. The question is, will that seed have a chance to take root...or will I be sued by Monsanto?" he joked.

When Carrey spoke on March 24, the March Against Monsanto was taking place, and #EndMonsanto was a top-trending social media hashtag. His reference was fitting at Maharishi University, known for its organic and ayurvedic philosophies, and the first college to offer organic, vegetarian meals to students, according to consciouslifenews.com.

Monsanto had filed 144 lawsuits against 410 farmers and 56 small farm businesses in at least 27 U.S. States, as of early 2013, reported the Huffington Post. Monstanto has sued neighboring farmers for having Monsanto seeds in their crops, carried by the wind. And most recently Monsanto is gearing up to sue Vermont for passing a law to require GMO labeling, despite the fact that 60 countries around the globe already require labeling of genetically engineered foods.

Beyond acting, Carrey is the author of children's books and founder of The Better U Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to improving global food security and helping rice farmers earn a better living. Watch his full speech here.
