A Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 carrying 295 people on its way from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur crashed in eastern Ukraine, near the Russian border today.

The Associated Press reported that Anton Gerashenko, an advisor to Ukraine’s Interior Ministor, wrote on Facebook that the plane was flying at 10,000 meters (33,000 feet) and was hit by a missile fired from a Buk launcher.

But Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said the plane was not shot down by his armed forces.

“We do not exclude that this plane was shot down, and we stress that the Armed Forces of Ukraine did not take action against any airborne targets,” he said. “We are sure that those who are guilty in this tragedy will be held responsible.”

The fate of the 295 people on board seems to be the same from all news outlets—Fox News report them all to be dead, and a Reuters correspondent saw burning wreckage and bodies on the ground at the village of Grabovo, where pro-Russian rebels have been active.

Who exactly is responsible for the plane coming down is still unknown.

Separatist leader Andrei Purgin told The Associated Press that Ukrainian troops were responsible, but he had no proof, and AP reporters had seen a launcher similar to the Buk missile system earlier Thursday near Snizhne, which is held by the rebels.

A number of amateur videos can be found on YouTube of what is thought to be smoke from the wreckage:
