Coeur d'Alene Cancel Ted Nugent Concert Over Rocker's 'Racist Remarks'

Ted Nugent was booked to play a concert at the Coeur d'Alene Casino Resort Hotel in Worley, Idaho, on August 4 -- but the show has been canceled due to concern over what the tribe called the rocker's "racist and hate-filled remarks."

The cancellation came on the heels of an article published by the Southern Poverty Law Center's Hatewatch blog on Monday morning. Hatewatch contacted Heather Keen, a public relations official for the tribe, who seemed to be caught off guard by the news that Nugent had been booked. "I’m going to have to check and see what happened here," she said. "Obviously, something may have fallen through the cracks."

Later in the day, Keen said in a statement, "Reviewing scheduled acts is not something in which Tribal Council or the tribal government participates; however, if it had been up to Tribal Council this act would have never been booked."

Then, Monday evening, Keen announced the concert was being canceled, explaining that "Nugent’s history of racist and hate-filled remarks was brought to Tribal Council’s attention earlier today." Tribal Chief Allan added that "We know what it’s like to be the target of hateful messages and we would never want perpetuate hate in any way."

The racist remarks most often cited are jabs at President Obama which include calling him a "subhuman mongrel" and a "chimpanzee." But Nugent's racially-insensitive behavior extends to Native Americans as well. He frequently wears a feather headdress on stage and appropriates a sacred Native symbol in his song "Great White Buffalo," both of which are highly disrespectful to Native culture.

In an April 2013 article for the right-wing commentary site WND.com (formerly WorldNetDaily), Nugent took aim at the movement to change the Washington Redskins team name using language that many Natives will find objectionable. The article was called "A Tomahawk Chop to Political Correctness" and included these turns of phrase:

"Every so often some numbskull beats the politically correct war drum protesting the names of sports teams."

"If there are Native Americans whose feathers are ruffled over the names of sports teams, I submit that they are sorely focused on all the wrong things."

"Call me crazy horse, but maybe we should start by addressing issues that truly matter most and would actually save Indian’s lives."

"These brutally ugly and heartbreaking conditions are the real modern trail of tears, but what’s really disgusting is that a Motown guitar player [Nugent] has to shine a light on the tragedy."

Critics of the name, Nugent addes, "are wafting smoke signals of real distress coming from the American Indian community that are being ignored."

Though Nugent clearly believes otherwise, anti-mascot activists would argue that the everyday use of a dated slur encourages exactly this sort of casual stereotyping and trivializing of Native culture. Nugent concluded the essay by casting himself as a savior of Natives:

"Because of my clean and sober, hands-on conservation bowhunting lifestyle and song 'The Great White Buffalo,' Native American tribes have invited me to teach their young people how to reconnect with the land and teach them how to bow hunt the mighty American bison. It was in their midst that I learned firsthand about the terrible problems facing my Indian BloodBrothers."

Yesterday's decision by the Coeur d'Alene suggests Nugent may need to double-check his standing in Indian country.

nugget mocks the human race and gets away with it. Is there not one person who can get through to him (it)? I do not understand at all how it continues to exist so this is my idea, to ship him (it) to a planet and he (it) can have the whole thing to make an ass of himself. It needs to be a planet with no oxygen or water.

With "saviors" (or "friends") like that, who needs enemies? Reminds me of the comic with the sports fan with headdress and face paint saying to the Native man, I feel for you, bro."

So the trophy-hunting, white supremacist Ted Nugent is now the Great White Savior of Indian culture? Priceless. It never ends.

He uses phrases such as 'blood brothers', claims we asking HIM to teach us our old ways? This man is nothing but disrespectful. When called out on the headdress issue, he called the Natives a bunch of foul names. This idiot thinks WAY too much of himself, and sees himself as, somehow, our 'saviour'? He's seen "Dances With Wolves" a few too many times. This is the pedophile that messed himself to get out of the draft. I hope other tribal venues will take a closer look at who they're hiring. People are contacting Emerald Queen Casino, where he is booked for TWO dates, and apparently, they are not happy about it, saying it's going to be expensive to cancel him. It's worth it. For the respect of our people. He's saying nasty things in the media about the C d'A's cancelling his show. His true colours. He uses Natives and calls them 'friend' as long as he's getting something, like 'special' rights to hunt on tribal land (as he did at Quinault).

Booker T. Washington: 'Making a living of their troubles' “There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs — partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs.” - Booker T. Washington

This appears to be a "Satire" attempt by Mr. Nugent; and a poor one at that. ................................................................................................................... Lets look at his inference to the stereotyped "Ethnic Slurs" .................................................................................................................. 1."subhuman mongrel" and a "chimpanzee." Hitler,Stalin,Mussolini said the same - then "The Greatest Generation " put them in their place in History & surfaced the In-Humanity of their Works; which appears to be Nugents Models of Government he embraces in his foundation and thought .............Mr. Nugent have you ever taken a Psych Personality Test just to see where you are on The Human Scale?.............................................................................................. ....................................................................................................................... 2."wears a feather headdress" which is technically Protected Lawful Expression & Speech - but very poor taste & demonstration of his purported "Family Value's" political platform and Belief System..................... ............................................................................................................... 3. Native symbol in his song "Great White Buffalo," which is akin to a Nativity and Cross display by Judeo Christian Followers............................. ............................................................................................................... 4. "A Tomahawk Chop to Political Correctness", again an attempted Satire Title ill said, & something a Beginning Student of Composition might use before the Teacher/Instructor/Professor approved a Final Draft after their Head Space & Timing got adjusted.............................................................. ................................................................................................................. 5. "numbskull beats the politically correct war drum", again NAI Symbol & Instrument that a "numbskull" do not know how or when to play due to lack of knowledge and experience................................................................... ................................................................................................................. 6. "Call me crazy horse", an inference to the War Chief that held "Custer Accountable" for the atrocities of the U.S. Calvary; and the name is well known Internationally with dignity; however Nugent implies a lesser standing without basis........................................................................................................ ...................................................................................................................... 7."modern trail of tears", which were the results of Waste ,Fraud,Abuse, Theft Under Color of Law, Defaulted Treaties from the White House on down to Corrupt Indian Agents, False Statements, Word Play Trickery & much more before, during and after Historical Periods of U.S. History.................... ...................................................................................................................... 8."are wafting smoke signals of real distress coming from the American Indian community that are being ignored." another attempt at Poor Satire, and Untrue Summary as U.S. Government, and States Government are being addressed through the "Legal Process's" toward the Harmful,Wrongful, and Offensive conduct by Non-Indian's of which Nugent appears to belong to...... ................................................................................................................ 9."Because of my clean and sober, hands-on..." Again, referring to the difficulties of "Red Society" being subject to "addiction" greater then Non-Indians which has been traced to "genetic" makeup of "First Peoples" World Wide & is being addressed by Health Practitioners Nation Wide..................... ..................................................................................................................... 10. "my Indian Blood Brothers." So, what Band, Tribe,or Nation adopted Nugent; and What NAI Recognized Ceremony was used to establish this alleged Standing with "The Red People"?.............................................. (me thinks the "Wannabe Casino Tribe)................................................. ................................................................................................................... Ladies & Gentlemen of The Red Nations and Peoples, great care should be given before celebrities are placed in "High Esteem" before granting an recognized association with a particular "First Peoples" - or even inferred that those individuals embrace The Red Peoples Values in Life & Spirituality. ........................................................................................................................... ........................................................................................................................... Celebrities are Celebrities because of Money and the Publicity they receive; which does not entitle them to a better treatment then other Human Beings. ........................................................................................................................... ........................................................................................................................... Many Celebrities spout whatever is "Popular Thought" of the moment in most cases, and not necessarily what their human foundation is about.............. ........................................................................................................................... The Red People are their own "Savior" Mr. Nugent; they do not need you, your money, or your music to speak for them....................................................... .......................................................................................................................... It is with some sorrow, but YOU are not invited into, onto, or near Indian Country and its People's - Have a Nice Day Mr. Nugent, even if you don't deserve it. ................................................................................................................................ ................................................................................................................................ - De Oppresso Liber, Non Gratum Anus Rodentum- Combat Wounded Vet ................................................................................................................................ tms thats a whitewash quote. It's not in the past. Natives are still discriminated against and so are blacks because people don't take the time to educate themselves and just blindly listen to everyone that wants to "educate" them. So they go their whole lives believing lies and having racist views. People believe everything they are fed. Just because you quote someone saying something doesn't make you smart. You are quoting him because that gives you an excuse not to feel empathy. You could try just keeping your mouth shut and try learning some more. It could have stayed in the past but racists keep it going and you obviously don't see the results that have occurred from a Native perspective. If whites truly understood what they've done to our land that we come from and to people around the world they would leave and find some uninhabited land and quit making excuses for themselves. Someone said to me "well you can't just go anywhere that land has to be habitable" During the Trail of Tears Natives were forced onto land that wasn't considered "habitable" and look how strong they were. I guess prejudice people just aren't tough enough to survive on their own.

Just when I think ten nugent couldn't get any nuttier, he tops himself. He is self-worshiping and self-deluded. He probably thinks he's a god. Native Americans know there is only one God: The Great Spirit! Some great posts, here. I would hope Native Americans would copy them and pass the word to other natives. We need to be as strong as the jewish people are, regarding ethnic hatred. We have to KNOW our enemies. It's easy to ignore them: less hurtful to just curse them under your breath. BUT, the higher power dictates that we love our enemies. We all know IT'S SO EASY TO LOVE THOSE WHO LOVE US!. Doesn't take an ounce of courage. Even the dumbest invader of the U.S. is loved by The Almighty! To love those incapable of loving us; to pray for these people, instead of returning hatred for hate. That and we still have to stand up and defend our people. No wonder people are confused!
