Smells Like Ted Nugent: Rocker Criticizes 'Stinkyass' Native Protesters

Christina Rose
8/9/14

In 1977, Ted Nugent told High Times magazine how he avoided serving in Vietnam: He didn't bathe for a month, and for the final week before his physical examination he didn't use the bathroom, simply defecating and urinating in his clothes. When he walked in for his physical examination, he told High Times, he was "a walking, talking hunk of human poop."

Thirty years later, Nugent claimed he made up the story. A classic case of "he said/he said."

The man nonetheless known for pooping his pants to get out of the draft is now painting those Native Americans who criticize him as unclean and revolting. Following a protest in Sturgis, South Dakota on Wednesday, Nugent announced on his Facebook page, "4 stinkyass unclean dipshit protestors that admitted they hate me AND ALL WHITE PEOPLE THAT STOLE THEIR LAND BULLSHIT!! See, it aint me they hate, they hate all Americans that produce & live the American Dream."

Four? More like forty, Mr. Nugent. On Wednesday, August 6, close to 40 people protested in front of the Full Throttle Bar, the largest concert venue in Sturgis, during the Sturgis Bike Rally.

Protestors have followed Nugent’s Shut Up and Jam! tour into Lakota territory, and according to Tom Cheyenne, Dakota, president of the American Indian Movement Grassroots, AIM will always protest Ted Nugent's U.S. concerts. "He has been saying things about Indian people, especially about our Lakota people, and I don't like it when I hear those racial remarks," Cheyenne said. "We got to do something, we have to keep our spirits high when somebody talks like we are nothing.”

Nugent told Gannett Wisconsin Media that "I take it as a badge of honor that such unclean vermin are upset by me and my positive energy," and "By all indicators, I don't think they actually qualify as people, but there has always been a lunatic fringe of hateful, rotten, dishonest people that hate happy, successful people.”

That quote came on the tail of a petition filed in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, requesting that Nugent’s show be canceled. He insisted the quote was not about Native Americans, but people who have tried to shut his shows down.

Two Indian casinos, the Couer D’Alene Casino Resort Hotel in Worley, Idaho, and the Emerald Queen Casino (owned by the Puyallup Tribe) in Tacoma, Washington, have canceled Nugent shows over his history of racist remarks (for context, check out the list of Repugnant Comments Ted Nugent Should Apologize For compiled by Media Matters.) . There was also a protest against a Nugent concert in Montclair, New Jersey, and he was actually paid about $16,000 this summer, not to perform at a Longview, Texas, Fourth of July Festival.

While some say Nugent is an equal opportunity offender, one of his recent comments goes straight to the heart. “My lifestyle as a white guy—though I’m hard to accept that designation—is more in the Indian tradition than many of the Indians themselves," he told Glenn Beck on the conservative talker's Blaze TV show. Here's the clip:

Protesters came to Sturgis from almost all of the reservations in South Dakota, including Pine Ridge, Rosebud, Cheyenne River, Standing Rock, Crow Creek and Lower Brule as well as Rapid City. It went well, according to Doug Bissonette, Lakota, who drove up from Pine Ridge to attend. “It turned out pretty good, a lot of bikers gave us the thumbs up," Bissonette said. "The owner said he kind of regretted it (hiring Nugent) and wouldn’t do it in the future.”

Indeed, Full Throttle owner Michael Ballard stated that had he known sooner about the protest and comments Nugent has been making, he wouldn’t have booked him. But for financial reasons, the show would go on. "I can't turn around and walk away from $150,000," Ballard told KOTA. "I mean that's the nuts and bolts of it. Now that we're made aware of it, we'll listen to it next time."

The only reported negative incidents at the protest occurred when a jeep went by the protest and occupants called out, “FU!” to the protestors. “That and a couple of guys tried to come out of the concert to come after us, I think they were drunk,” Bissonette said.

James Swan, Lakota, founder of the United Urban Warrior Society of Rapid City, South Dakota, said people came from Wisconsin, as did a couple from Hawaii who were caravaning their way from Bear Butte, a sacred place of prayer that stands imposingly just  two miles outside of Sturgis.

“There was a really good turnout,” Swan said. “My message to Nugent was, he is not welcome in Indian country.  We asked him to quit wearing a headdress, and running around in a loincloth. Wearing the headdress and using foul language, it’s disgracing us. He just doesn’t get it, he said nobody minds if he wears the Green Bay Packers t-shirt.”

Down the street, another concert venue, Buffalo Chip, was well attended by many Natives who passed by and lent their support.  The Nugent concert was outdoors, but surrounded by walls.  Swan said that bikers were really cool, and called Nugent “Shitty Pants.”

Phillip Yenyo (Mashika) of AIM Ohio, and Albert Ortiz (Kiowa) of Indiana and Kentucky AIM, were planning another protest in Oxford, Ohio on Saturday night at the Indian Creek Ampitheatre, the next show on Nugent’s schedule. AIM will be planning additional protests; a good way to find out about actions in your area is to search for your local AIM chapter or United Urban Warrior Society pages on Facebook.

Because of it is used constantly as racist term, I'm surprised that the Academic community still uses the term "whites" to describe or to designate European Americans. The term has been used as a weapon against people of color and indigenous peoples. Self-described racists like Ted Nugent use the term “whites” to denigrate people of color and indigenous peoples. The Academic community should quit using the term “whites” for any purpose.

Thank you for fighting the hate, I will learn from your example and do my part to see that those who prosper from hate have a harder time doing it. Mr. Nugent if you are listening, why don't you put your power to positive use? Next time before you speak imagine how many people you can hurt or help just by thinking of the potential consequences of your words and actions. Do you want to be known as the angry guy who just spreads cheap hate, or as someone who changed this place for the better? Right now I wouldn't want your legacy, there are so many other great men who lead by example, work hard for positive change, and always remember that they need to be a role model for their own children and others. Yep a microphone can be a powerful thing in the hands of someone who is willing to think harder and do actual work before using it. I'm not feeling the 'positive energy" I am only hearing a lot of anger. It's your legacy Ted, you can be known as a man who did something great or as another angry hateful shock jock.

(from the article) The man nonetheless known for pooping his pants to get out of the draft is now painting those Native Americans who criticize him as unclean and revolting. _______________ Ironically enough, this idiot is ALSO the same person who pretends to be Pro-Veteran and supported Bush's "war in Iraq." History doesn't matter to these types otherwise they would see they are being cajoled by a draft-dodger. Should we believe Nugent's original story? Yes, he didn't serve in the military, did he? ___________ Wow! He's just like the "forefathers!" Big words from a black heart. " "By all indicators, I don't think they actually qualify as people, but there has always been a lunatic fringe of hateful, rotten, dishonest people that hate happy, successful people.” ______________________________ This reeks of the elitism conservatives feel entitled to. They like to believe the poor or minorities hate them for their success only because they can't see the truth; we hate them because they're assholes!

Mr. Nugent is playing "Word Games" and grasping at straws when he surfaces the Decades Old Term - Communist - and applies that to NAI Protesters......... .......................................................................................................... When you choose to have a Public Persona, all those WORDS said, are On The Record for anyone to refer to in the future.................................... .................................................................................................................. Mr. Nugent at one time was the Conservative Poster Child, spewing out alleged Family Values that the GOP falls back on when debates get tough. .................................................................................................................. What I suggest to The Red People, is do NOT get into "Play Ground Word Games", and with dignity use terms that can be used anywhere without reservations as to meaning, and focused argument - that Children will not repeat the Stupidity of cursing because someone lacks an education & does not know better............................................................................................... ......................................................................................................................... Being a Hypocrite as Mr. Nugent appears to be, speaks for its self....... ........................................................................................................................ The Red People are a "Warrior Society", and that is where they get many valuable Lessons in Life, and not listening to a Pseudo Intellectual spew forth words off the top of his head in his attempt to belittle Red People and Lifestyle, as Jealousy is such an Ugly Thing wouldn't you say?........................................ .................................................................................................................................. There are many ways to contribute to a Nation, either by way of Military Service, or by way of Public Service at various levels in Local,State, or National Organizations - so I suggest that the lack of Military Service is only part of the response to Mr. Nugent - and his alleged conduct to avoid The Draft during the Vietnam War clearly demonstrates his Spiritual Character.... ......................................................................................................................... As to future PROTESTS, I suggest that carefully thought out Vocabulary be used to identify the Points that are to be made, else you will lower your self to Mr. Nugents level and "The School Yard Bully" antics............................... ......................................................................................................................... Other points in closing is SENILITY, in Mr. Nugents challenge to The Red People on their personal hygiene................................................................ ........................................................................................................................ Mr. Nugent should go Skeet Shooting with Mr. Dick Cheney, to hone his 2nd. Amendment Rights - and let the Men in White Coats bring him home after his Field Trips to Indian Country without Invitation; and account for all the Village Idiots of his caliber......................................................................................... ........................................................................................................................ By the way, Spirituality is NOT walking around with a pious mind; and pretending to be respectful; it is the "Age Old Rule" of "Doing Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do To You" - and frankly Mr. Nugent - you miss the point by a long shot...................................................................................... .......................................................................................................................

It would appear that a few of these people protesting are being misled by the moveon.org crowd out there...you know back in the day when they called some women from Salem 'Witches,' they would burn them at the stake without having any proof whatsoever...I see the exact same thing happening here. Judge a person by their actions, deeds and content of their character not by rumors.....as a Native American I stand with Ted because I have seen his good deeds, and I know he stands for good - unlike the unscrupulous character of the current media...

From a white brother, -currently trapped in the east coast,.. -for WHAT it is WORTH,.. "Mr." Nugent's 'handlers' demanded Forty THOUSAND Dollars ( that's $40,000 kids ) for him to 'speak' @ one of the larger Albany New York ANTI-SAFE ACT protests in mid- 2013 to protest a governor that is a full -blown TYRANT. Suffice to say, some wished his 'patriotism was more than a mouthful. Some wished other things for him... Sadly "Mr." Nugent is nothing but an opportunistic blowhard. The 'man' has no ethics, standards OR, real love of country. No better really than those attempting to STEAL our God-Given RIGHTS from us. They have a lot in common. And all are to be despised. Hoka-Hey ! to my red skinned BROTHERS -just another Red Blooded American "biker"

Ted does NOTHING if he's not getting paid. He misappropriates Native culture and LIES about it (first the headdress was given by an Apache, now the story is Lakota, but couldn't name the tribe/band, except for his sound guy to say, "It's very remote"). He only 'likes' us when he can get something. Special hunting privileges, money, mileage. He takes WAY more than he needs, for the love of killing. This is not a Native thing. He makes claims he cannot back up, then claims we NEED him to teach us our old ways. He's throwing racist, insane tantrums everywhere. Problem is, some people are eating it up. A county fair in Washington ALSO canceled him. He is banned from hunting in three states, goes on and hosts canned hunts where the animals cannot escape, baits them, etc. NOTHING ethical about him, AT ALL. And the owner of the bar most certainly DID know about the protest, as he announced in advance protesters were banned from the area!

He wants to be a burr in anyone's behind. He is VERY attention seeking. Which of course keeps him in the news-free advertising. One has to wonder why he would pick on the natives. If he wanted to know if natives are still concerned about racism, I see he got an answer, good. I like his music, but I have to delete him from my life. He is unbalanced, I seek balance in my life. Shame on this shameless person. A malcontent is an enemy mostly to himself. A person who goes into so many directions, he cannot be seen. I agree with all comments here! I will not "see" him ever again. Cheap shot Ted. Go home and shoot something.
