Jacoby Ellsbury Is Batting 1000!
The Yankees are getting their money’s worth out of Jacoby Ellsbury, Navajo, who is the 16th highest paid player in Major League Baseball, according to USAToday.com. The center fielder collected his 1000th career hit on Monday, and about two weeks ago, he saved the Yanks from being part of an embarrassing piece of history -- by hitting his 10th home run of the season, the team avoided the their first back-to-back shutout since 1999.
“It’s pretty special,” Ellsbury told the New York Daily News, “They got the ball for me and it will go in my collection. I guess it means you’ve played for a little while.”
In his first at-bat on Monday, Ellsbury earned his 999th hit off the Royals’ James Shields. And in the seventh inning, he smashed one into right field, extending the Yankees lead by 3. Then, at the top of the ninth, he hit a two run homer upping his 2014 home run total to 11, with 76 total in his career.
The Yankees beat the Royals 8-1.
