Genealogical Society to Discuss Indian Territory Medical Doctors
During the Oklahoma Genealogical Society meeting June 6 Jacque Graham and Denise Slattery will discuss Indian Territory medical doctors and records.
According to The Oklahoman, the United States government started weeding out those who only claimed to be doctors. If you have ancestors who were doctors, physician's assistant or other medical professionals, they had to obtain a license to practice in the state of Oklahoma.
Graham will dress as Belle Cobb, the first woman doctor in Indian Territory, and present a monologue about her life. Slattery will discuss "Where to Find Your Ancestors' Medical License" and talk about the establishment of an exam and licensing board, information recorded on applications and where those repositories are.
The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in the Chesapeake Event Center at the Oklahoma History Center, 800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive.
