Indigenous Students a Priority in Australia
Education awareness for indigenous Australians has been increased recently as some institutions have begun creating leadership posts in hopes of increasing the numbers of indigenous students and academics.
In a recently article by The New York Times it was reported that indigenous people account for 2.4 percent of the population but constitute on 1.25 percent of students entering universities, according to a report by the Center for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Melbourne.
“We recognize the need to play a leading national role in the process of reconciliation, and, through education, to help bridge the economic and social divides that persist between indigenous and nonindigenous Australians,” Michael Spence, vice chancellor a the University of Sydney told the Times.
