Israeli Geneticists Find Natives With Ashkenazi Jewish Mutation
A harmful modification in the BRCA1 gene prevalent among Jews of Eastern European descent, which increases the risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer, has been found in a Native American tribe who migrated from Mexico to Colorado some 200 years ago, reported IsraelNationalNews.com.
The report, which will be published in the European Journal of Human Genetics, was written by researchers from the Sheba Medical Center in Israel. The researchers say the two groups may share a common ancestor—Christopher Columbus, who we reported on May 21 may have been Jewish himself.
None of the articles reporting on the research specified which tribe, but Colorado has two federally recognized tribes, the Southern Ute Indian Tribe of the Southern Ute Indian Reservation and the Ute Mountain Tribe of the Ute Mountain Reservation.
