Kid Chefs: Submit Your Healthy Lunch Recipes for the Chance to Participate in a Kid's 'State Dinner'
Let's Move!, the First Lady Michelle Obama's initiative to solve the problem of childhood obesity within a generation, is looking for parents or legal guardians of kids ages 8 to 12 with kitchen skills from across the country to submit their child's nutritious and tasty lunch recipe.
The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge is looking for meals that are healthy, creative, affordable and tasty. The deadline to submit a recipe is June 17.
The young chefs should follow a few simple guidelines. The recipes should incorporate all five food groups listed on ChooseMyPlate.gov (low-fat dairy, whole grains, protein, fruits, and veggies) or have several of them in a recipe and suggest others as sides to round out the meal. Epicurious, a sponsor of the competition, provided an example: a whole-wheat wrap with tofu, pickled cabbage, and carrots, served with a strawberry low-fat yogurt.
The Challenge winners and their parent or legal guardian from each state and territory will visit the White House for a Kid's "State Dinner" this August, hosted by Mrs. Obama and Epicurious.
Chosen recipes will be published in an online book to help share these new, healthy lunch time ideas.
