Disney has released a handful of images from The Lone Ranger, a film starring Johnny Depp as Tonto that will be released in 2013, as well as the movie's official poster. In this re-imagined version of the story, which started as a radio serial in the 1930s, Depp's Tonto will not be a mere sidekick to the Lone Ranger, played by Armie Hammer. "It's a dysfunctional buddy movie," director Gore Verbinski says, according to USA Today. "It's two guys who start literally and figuratively handcuffed together who end up on the same mission with completely different world views. They sort of rub off on one another. But they have plenty of disagreements." Verbinski describes Depp's Tonto, who is Comanche in this take on the tale, as "an odd-shaman, an outcast from his own tribe, who has created his own mystical world." As previously reported by ICTMN, filming took place in scenic Monument Valley over the course of the summer.

'This is during an attack sequence,' Verbinski said, according to USA Today. 'The film has everything you can want, from Cavalry to Comanche.'

Though ostensibly inanimate, the bird on Johnny Depp's head seems to change poses from scene to scene.

Verbinski calls this scene 'their bad-ass moment,' according to USA Today.

'Johnny and I have been able to create a really good dynamic between these two guys,' says Armie Hammer, according to USA Today.

Trains play a huge role in the film -- the crew built a massive circular track so that the scenes could be filmed continuously, without having to stop and turn the train around.

In addition to advancing the plot, the train has symbolic meaning -- according to USA Today, Verbinski says the emergence of the steam engine asks 'What do we give up in the name of progress?'

The poster art reflects the theme of equality between the two main characters -- it's a mashup of the Ranger's mask and Tonto's bird headdress, with some of Tonto's face paint in evidence as well.
