Teachers Carol Hawkins and Nancy Fairman are keeping Native American history alive in Renton, Washington. Collectively, the two have more than 70 years of teaching first through sixth grades. Even though they are now retired, they volunteer their time to bring the history and culture of the Duwamish Tribe to fourth graders. The Coast Salish Curriculum—developed by the Renton History Museum and funded by a grant from 4Culture—explores the social life, values and beliefs of the Coast Salish and Duwamish.
