NM Governor Solicits More Native Parents to Serve as Foster Families
Federal law requires Native American children in state custody be placed in homes of Native American foster families whenever possible.
Currently, 65 Native American children remain in state care in Bernalillo County. Unfortunately, only three Native American foster families are in the area. In San Juan County, only two Native American foster homes are available, and the study has custody of 52 Native American children, the governor's office said.
New Mexico residents willing to become foster families can contact the Children, Youth and Families Department.
