Onondaga Nation, Ecologic Solutions Form Historic Green Business Partnership
A Haudenosaunee nation from central New York and an environmental products company from Brooklyn, New York, have teamed up to form a American Indian–green business partnership to help rid workplaces of toxic cleansers and replace them with people-friendly sustainable alternatives.
The Onondaga Nation and EcoLogic Solutions announced their historic alliance March 30 in a release. Under the terms of the partnership, the Onondaga Nation will become the second-largest shareholder in EcoLogic Solutions, a leading supplier of natural, plant-based cleaning supplies for restaurants, hotels, schools, office buildings and other commercial users. EcoLogic Solutions will use the investment to create jobs and expand current operations, while developing new products and approaches to eliminate harmful cleaning supplies from workplaces.
“EcoLogic Solutions is a company that shares our goals of a more sustainable planet, and a better, more holistic way of doing business,” said Jake Edwards, member of the Onondaga Nation Council of Chiefs. “This is the first time we’ve invested in a U.S.–based environmental firm. When you partner with Onondaga, you partner for life.”
The Onondaga Nation is ardently involved in restoring and protecting the environmental. Last spring, the nation and its environmental partners—Onondaga County Executive Joanne Mahoney, the Partnership for Onondaga Creek (POC), and Atlantic States Legal Foundation (ASLF)—were honored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with the Environmental Quality Award, the highest award presented to the public, for their efforts to update the city of Syracuse’s 100-year-old sewer system, which was dumping untreated sewage and runoff directly into Onondaga Creek.
“The Onondaga Nation and its people have a unique spiritual, cultural and historic relationship with the earth and the waters, which is embodied in Gayanashagowa, the Great Law of Peace,” Edwards said. “It is the duty of the Nation’s leaders to work for a healing of the earth, to protect it and pass it on to future generations. This partnership is about making a better world for the generations yet to come.”
The Onondaga–EcoLogic Solutions partnership seems to be a match made in green heaven.
“When I founded EcoLogic Solutions, I looked to Onondaga values and sustainability as paragons for our business,” said EcoLogic CEO Anselm Doering. “That’s why I’m honored, and humbled, to make in this announcement today. It’s the fulfillment of a dream within a dream.”
A 20-year veteran of the Green Movement, Doering said his moment of truth arrived eight years ago when he walked into a rest-stop restroom and was greeted by a large poster stating, “Proud to be cleaned by Lysol—Sponsored by Host Marriott.
“Knowing what I knew about the toxic ingredients in that product, I couldn’t believe someone would actually be ‘proud’ of that. This, combined with my knowledge that there did exist products that worked well, were price-competitive and fully nonhazardous, sparked the brush fire. I decided to start a company fully committed to sustainable business practices that carried and sold only the most effective, environmentally preferable cleaning solutions that would be safer for the health of their staff and for the environment. It was an exciting ‘aha’ moment, because everyone cleans,” Doering said.
Based in the Brooklyn Navy Yard along with 30 other green businesses, EcoLogic Solutions manufactures soaps, detergents, degreasers, solvents, glass cleaners, disinfectants and other earth-friendly cleaning supplies for the institutional marketplace using bio-based formulations that are readily biodegradable and are nontoxic to humans and aquatic life. The company uses groundbreaking technology and scientific advances to offer the most progressive, environmentally preferable commercial cleaners on the market today.
The company’s clients include Chipotle Mexican Grill, Whole Foods Markets, the Statue of Liberty, Mandarin Oriental Hotels, Mario Batali & Bastianich Hospitality Group, the Durst Organization and NBC Universal, among many others. It sells exclusively to wholesale markets. EcoLogic Solutions’ products will be made available to Onondaga Nation citizens soon.
The sovereign Onondaga nation has a 7,300-acre territory south of Syracuse, New York. The Haudenosaunee (People of the Long House) Confederacy is an alliance of six American Indian Nations; other members include the Mohawk, Oneida, Cayuga, Seneca and Tuscarora nations.
