President Declares Emergency for Puerto Rico
In response to the affects of Hurricane Irene on August 21, The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced it will make federal aid available to the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
President Barack Obama’s action gave the Department of Homeland Security and FEMA the ability to coordinate disaster relief efforts to help alleviate any hardships and suffering caused by the storm. According to a press release FEMA is specifically authorized to identify, mobilize, and provide at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency. Emergency protective measures, limited to direct federal assistance, will be provided at 75 percent federal funding.
