1/4/12

The history of the Navajo Code Talkers will forever be remembered, but on January 3, the famous group lost another member from its ranks as Keith Little, died at Fort Defiance hospital at the age of 87.

In an Associated Press article at The Republic, Little was said to be one of the most recognizable of the remaining Navajo Code Talkers and a vocal proponent for a museum to tell their story.

A public memorial is planned for Friday, January 6 in Window Rock, Arizona, with funeral services scheduled for Saturday, January 7 in Fort Defiance. Ben Shelly, president of the Navajo Nation, has ordered flags lowered across the reservation from Thursday through Sunday.

Thank you for calling attention to this important contribution to the Allied victory in WWII. I can't help but wince, however, at your use of the word "infamous" in describing Mr. Little. It doesn't mean exceptionally noted--instead, Webster's defines infamous as "1 : having a reputation of the worst kind : notorious as being of vicious, contemptible, or criminal character."

Perhaps you read a different article than the one above cptdisgruntled. I didn't see the work "infamous" used in any part of the article about Mr. Little. The Code Talkers in the article were referred to as a famous group.

The country owes thanks to men like Keith Little and all the Code Talkers that contributed so very much during WWII. Their service was so special and should never be forgotten. I am glad the Navajo Reservation will be lowering their flags for Mr. Little from Thursday through Sunday to honor him. It's too bad the entire American Nation doesn't do the same.

My most sincere apologies to you cptdisgruntled. I just got the first part of the article in my e-mail and it did have "infamous" in that part of it. I see that the Editors have "noted and fixed" the problem. I'm sorry I hadn't seen that earlier.
