Nice Day for a Genocide: Shocking Quotes on Indians By U.S. Leaders, Pt 1

ICTMN Staff
7/10/13

These quotes about Indians from American leaders span from the 1750s to 1817.

Stay tuned next week for Part 2.

Benjamin Franklin, from his autobiography, 1750s

“If it be the design of Providence to extirpate these Savages in order to make room for cultivators of the Earth, it seems not improbable that rum may be the appointed means.”

Benjamin Franklin (Joseph-Siffrein Duplessis (1725–1802)/Wikipedia)

Orders of George Washington to General John Sullivan, May 31, 1779

“The immediate objectives are the total destruction and devastation of their settlements and the capture of as many prisoners of every age and sex as possible. It will be essential to ruin their crops in the ground and prevent their planting more.”

George Washington (Thinkstock)

Governor William Henry Harrison, of the Indiana Territory (1800-1812) while defending displacement of the Indians

“Is one of the fairest portions of the globe to remain in a state of nature, the haunt of a few wretched savages, when it seems destined by the Creator to give support to a large population and to be the seat of civilization?”

William Henry Harrison daguerreotype. (Wikipedia)

John Quincy Adams, 1802, when rationalizing territorial imperatives as God’s will

“What is the right of the huntsman to the forest of a thousand miles over which he has accidentally ranged in quest of prey? Shall the fields and vallies, which a beneficent God has formed to teem with the life of innumerable multitudes, be condemned to everlasting barrenness?”

John Quincy Adams (Library of Congress)

President Thomas Jefferson, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, December 29, 1813

“This unfortunate race, whom we had been taking so much pains to save and to civilize, have by their unexpected desertion and ferocious barbarities justified extermination and now await our decision on their fate.”

Thomas Jefferson by Rembrandt Peale in 1800. (Wikipedia)

James Monroe, in a letter to Andrew Jackson, October 5, 1817

“The hunter or savage state requires a greater extent of territory to sustain it, than is compatible with the progress and just claims of civilized life, and must yield to it. Nothing is more certain, than, if the Indian tribes do not abandon that state, and become civilized, that they will decline, and become extinct. The hunter state, tho maintain’d by warlike spirits, presents but a feeble resistance to the more dense, compact, and powerful population of civilized man.”

Portrait of James Monroe, 1819. (Wikipedia)

One must not forget Andrew Jackson and his betrayal of the Cherokees, a most Civilized Tribe. The Cherokees were so well established, civilized, and making progress that the people of Georgia were jealous of all they owned.

This is why these people are not, and will never be my 'founding fathers'. Good thing is they failed. We are still here!

These "Quotes" will not be taught in US History Classes in K-12 levels; as they demonstrate that these Men were held in "High Esteem" the hypocrites that they are and were........................................................................................... .......................................................................................................................... The US Constitution & Bill of Rights were "Plagiarized" from the Iroquois & Cherokee Confederacies - in fact,John Law used those Models for The Constitutions of The Carolina because they embraced the Wisdom of Freedom of Conscience,Freedom of Movement,Freedom of Trade & Commerce between the Sovereign Nations and Tribes that the European Mind did not develop in their own histories to the extent of Aboriginal peoples in The Americas....................................................................................... ................................................................................................................... These "Politic" are held in "High Esteem" in contemporary US History, however if these "Quotes" are used by Modern Day Politic; they would be deemed "Raciest - Chicken Hawks"................................................ .................................................................................................................... These "Politic" are submitted for being "learned & civilized";yet they mimicked the "Red Way in Terms & Logic and Ways".......................................... ..................................................................................................................... The "New American Society" brought their "drama" to these shores; and then accused the "Red Way" of manifesting these "Society Troubles" as the cause for their own self created difficulties......................................................... ...................................................................................................................... That is why it is always best to honor the idea & principals; and not the People who utter the words as their own............................................................... ...................................................................................................................... In Today's Society for those who are not "Sheepeople", these Men would be deemed "Hypocrites,Liars,& Thieves" that are "Chicken Hawks" in coveting things that are not theirs - Nothing more then a Simpleton Politician... ...................................................................................................................... If I was any of them in a "Past Life",I would be ashamed of myself as being a "Hypocrite" among mankind...................................................................... ......................................................................................................................

As Indigenous peoples, we need to start thinking critically and not be too eager to wave the flag in our ceremonies. We have our Eagle staff and that is our flag. As Thomas Jefferson noted " This unfortunate race, who we had been taking so much pains to save and to civilize, have by their unexpected desertion and ferocious barbarities justified extermination and now await our decision on their fate." We are still strong and we are still here! It is time to begin to decolonize our thinking and to band together as Indigenous peoples of this magnificent Turtle Island instead of fighting each other. Peace!

These "Great" men are self-identified for all time by their words as ungrateful degenerates when Indians fed the starving colonists and showed them how to plant. Our "uncivilized" ancestors developed cultures here that stressed the importance of taking care of the land and water for centuries, while theirs have destroyed and polluted Mother Earth irreparably, in a very short time. 300+ Narragansett men, women, and children were incinerated by 1,000 colonial militia in the Great Swamp Massacre of 1675. Teddy Roosevelt praised those volunteer militia who killed 200 Indian men, women, and children, and mutilated their bodies, at Sand Creek, in 1864. In 1851 California Governor Peter Burnett declared, "A war of extermination will continue to be waged . . . until the Indian race becomes extinct."

Very good article, although I think it only inflames the wounds from the past.. this history should be told in school.... politicians are all liars, I dont think it matters what race or creed they come from because that is how they got into office in the first place. .... Nothing has changed , you dont have to go back very far to find evil folks in the white house... George Bush and his vp Dick Cheany for instance..or Bill Clinton... I wonder what quotes could be found from that time period made by the popes and religious leaders that gave these presidents the feeling that they were doing gods work...
