The Washington Post Polls Readers on Team Name

Washington Post readers are casting their votes on whether they think the Washington Redskins should change their name.

The poll, which was posted on October 3, asks them to vote on the decades-long argument by clicking ‘yes’ or ‘no.’

So far, 43 percent voted to change the team’s name and 57 percent say it should stay the same.

Ricky Gibson, a Post reader, voted to change the name because his adopted daughter is Native American. He wrote, “Say we go to a game and she's wearing a Redskins jersey, cheering the team, and a camera puts her image on the large screen with the caption, ‘A redskin for the Redskins!!’" If it ever were acceptable, it isn’t anymore,” he wrote.

2ndReconUSMC wrote, “I think the PC Police should stop trying to impose their will on the rest of America. Hail to the Redskins, and give us back our Bullets!”

The polling page, which can be found here, says that the results are not statistically valid, and cannot be assumed to reflect the views of the Washington Post users as a group or the general population.

The Post's editorial board is one of several media companies urging the team's owner, Dan Snyder, to change the name.

“Redskins” is part of that mentality from colonial times when our people were hunted by soldiers and mercenaries who were paid for the scalps of our men, women and children. How can anyone claim this is a proud tradition to come from? The labels, racism and hatred that Indian people continue to experience are directly tied to those racial slurs. And remember this, "redskins" is to Native Americans is what Nig#%r implies to the black folks

WOW. that is a satisfying thing to read. in my community none of the other natives seem to give a flying fuck about anything. I brought this up in class once and they tried to shame me for it. I've got no respect for people who simply can't understand the reality of this profoundly offensive symbol and what it means for our people as a whole. because there isn't a racist team for mexicans, blacks, whites or asians. only native americans. that to me is unforgivable. that's why I don't watch baseball.

The Washington Redskins football team should be allowed to keep it's name on one condition, that there are other teams with names "Whiteskins", "Blackskins", and "Yellowskins". Otherwise, they should be forced to change their name.
