Video: I Am Not a Costume

For a social psychology class Noel Altaha created a YouTube video explaining why dressing as her Native American ancestors for Halloween is wrong. Some of Noel's classmates offered their opinions in the video as well.

"When Caucasian people dress like our ancestors it really disrespects our culture," says Araya Velasquez, White Mountain Apache.

The video references the We're a Culture, Not a Costume Campaign from the Students Teaching About Racism in Society at Ohio University and the Kardashians—Kourtney Kardashian dressed as Pocahontas during a taping of Dancing With the Stars last year. The video also references how many of the women's costumes are sexualized and 1 in 3 Native women will be raped in her lifetime.
