Miss Cherokee Competition About to Heat Up
Six young women are competing to represent the Cherokee Nation at the 2011-2012 Miss Cherokee Leadership Competition on Saturday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Cornerstone Fellowship Church in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. A reception at 6 p.m. will offer the public the opportunity to meet and greet the contestants in person before the event.
"This year’s contestants include 21-year-old Jamie Dry of Locust Grove, 22-year-old Candice Byrd of Tulsa, 20-year-old Jade Hansen of Jay, 19-year-old Sidney Kimble of Tahlequah, 18-year-old Jade Sikes of Salina and 22-year-old Kendall McCoy of Cookson. The winner will take home the Miss Cherokee title along with the copper crown and a $3,000 scholarship, while the runner-up will receive a $2,000 scholarship and the second runner-up will receive a $1,000 scholarship," stated a press release from the Cherokee Nation.
“I am always impressed with the caliber of contestants we get and this year is no exception,” said Nancy Scott, event coordinator, in the press release. “We have six excellent contenders. I encourage the public to come and support these young ladies as they present their message and cultural presentations.”
The categories the contestants will be judged on include an interview, social skills, a platform presentation, tribal knowledge and their use of the Cherokee language. Their leadership attributes will be demonstrated via their knowledge of cultural activities and skills, the experience they've accrued in community service and leadership, and their desire and ability to share those qualities with the public in a gracious, professional manner.
"Current Miss Cherokee, Brooke Hudson of Coweta, will pass her title to the 2011 winner during the competition. The newly crowned Miss Cherokee will make her first public appearance at the Principal Chief’s State of the Nation ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 3 at the courthouse square in Tahlequah, during the 59th Cherokee National Holiday," the release stated.
