Chic Monaco Royal Puts on Feathers and War Paint for Gucci-Sponsored Equestrian Event

Natives have a few things to celebrate in their ongoing culture war—they can claim victory in recent clashes with No Doubt and Paul Frank Industries. And the run-in with Victoria's Secret was at worst a tie (the lingerie maker announced it will not include any footage of Karlie Kloss in a feather headdress in this evening's telecast of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show). But if change is coming, ever so slowly, on the home front, the state of American Indian cultural identity in the world still has a long way to go.

Take the getup worn by Charlotte Casiraghi, a member of the royal family of Monaco and the granddaughter of Princess Grace, for this past weekend's Paris Masters International Jumping Competition, an event sponsored by Gucci. Britain's Daily Mail sums up the Native reaction in its headline: "Monaco princess Charlotte Casiraghi branded 'ignorant' over Native American costume at Paris showjumping event".

Casiraghi, known for her equestrian prowess, has appeared on the cover of French Vogue and currently appears in Gucci advertisements running in France.

Here's some footage from the event posted to the Daily Mail's YouTube channel:

This marks arguably the second year in a row that Casiraghi has displayed racial "ignorance" with her choice of costume at the competition. The following image turned up on Tumblr:

"So it’s for a good cause, huh?" wrote Tumblr user Prin-ses-ka-ro-LEEN. "How about supporting the end of minority stereotyping while you’re at it and knocking this bullshit off next year."

ttotally inappropriate. What message are u sending. Are we dressing up as royal family members shrouded in divorce and extra marital affairs scandals, perhaps we could ride up to Buckinham Palace dressed as the Queen, in a poorly designed Fashion faux pas!!!!!

Native peoples do not "own" their achievements of their ancestors. They can be proud of them, but they are not the ones who have achieved them. Native styles of those people originally in what is now America are in the public domain. Any person who cares to can wear a feather in their hair, or put on a deer-skin coat. These things do not have design patents. You say "Natives have a few things to celebrate in their ongoing culture war". Native peoples who think they are in a cultural war are duped--carrying a chip on their shoulders. The rest of the world is celebrating their culture, for nice reasons, not bad ones. Native people should be glad their cultures are not simply forgotten by the rest of the world. It is better for their heritage to be recognized than overlooked.
