Performers wearing 'Indian' makeup during the 2013 Mummers Parade in Philadelphia

Video: Mummers Parade Dancers in Redface for 'Pow Wow' Performance

Yesterday we posted a story about a racially-insensitive skit put on at the Mummers Parade in Philadelphia on New Year's Day.

A tipster has brought to our attention some videos that many readers will find to be more shocking. They depict a string band performance featuring dozens of dancers in faux Indian regalia, their faces darkened with makeup.

There are several videos of this group online, with quiet murmurs of commentary on the racial aspect. Here's one:

"To the haters posting on all the Quaker City videos, go hate somewhere else, no wants to hear your negative thoughts. This was done for entertainment and was very well researched. No offense was meant so take a hike."

One could go on at length about why such a costume is considered racist, although a common and very effective argument goes like this: If caucasian dancers were to paint their faces brown or black, and wear "African" costumes (no matter how "well researched"), would that be considered racist?

The wearing of blackface in the parade was officially outlawed in 1964. It would seem that redface has not been discouraged in the slightest. This group, the Quaker City String Band, won second place:

Wow. An army of the most suck-ass "fancy dancers" playing saxophones. You can only tell they're white people, they couldn't even dance their own culture's dances because they don't really even have a culture.

Fucking white ppl, I tell ya, absolutely no morals, values, or any type of class to speak of. Is their own made-up history to ugly to express or revel in. Let me get something straight, I am not a racist, I know many very good white ppl with good intentions. These ppl here, are just another group of WANNABEE'S -ha ha ha, the WANKERBEE tribe ...What stupid stupid ppl ....If i was white, i would be embarrassed right about now !!!!

Wasting time, and energy on meaningless crap. there's alot more important things to focus on, than a parade. Move on. I'm Native, and I really don't see the point in giving it more publicity.

There was nothing authentic looking or inspiring about watching this. It is sad to see that people can not be more respectful to a race of people that were tp, killed, and hunted almost out of exsistance. WHAT A SHAME

I hope there is someone who can sue you for this, it is disgraceful, including the music, smoke signals and your regalia and face paint.

Let me play devil's advocate here for a minute. Don't you dance at Pow Wow's and charge people to watch you dance for "entertainment"? What's the difference? How do you know some of these "dancers" aren't Native? As I see it, this is just entertainment. Natives should be more upset about what our country is doing to our Mother instead of coming unglued by this sort of spectacle. Join "Idle No More" and put your energies toward something worthwhile and let this go!

Wow, they researched Native culture so well that they even found out something not even Natives knew - that stand up basses and banjos are Native instruments! Oh and they all live in tipis and make totem poles and wear war bonnets.

Hey I can identify the stereo typical boy scout mentality; the smoke signals, painted redfaces, the typical boy scout indian rythm beat. Yea the NAACP would have an million man march if it was depicted african slave style or maybe because the buffalo soldiers were left out, ha. The question is how do we get over this race thing. Tribes are ethnicities. Unlike generalized caucasian or african american citizens. Personally as a human being I can appreciate the work it took to make up their regalia, if it maybe called that, and the effort it took to create, compose, direct, and practise this performance of jubilation. The commitment of the people whose whole thought was to entertain. No violence, just a desire to entertain society bring smiles and excitement to one of this countries gathering. For a moment people were brought together in a good way. I do not believe it was done for the sole purpose of demeaning our Native culture. I believe it was meant to be inclusive rather than to further ostracize our people. When are we as human beings going to get over this race ideology and pursue a way of peace and humanism. So peace to all the entertainers out there and peace to all the haters too. Hopefully one day we will all love our planet again.

What research? Where? I have been to many Pow Wows & have never seen anyone dressed like that or ever seen or danced a dance like that. It's not even near the music either.....I am offended & hurt. Will it ever end?

Nothing new here except, Indian country today is FINALLY reporting this. In Florida the Chasco Fiesta Krewe is a parade float of white people in red face. That has been protested for over 10 years. A powwow is also a part of the Chasco Fiesta and it is almost as bad as the parade float.

All I can say, is: "OMG!" To NOT see this as racially insensitive. Well researched? From hollywood's past depictions maybe.

what I object to is their use of the white buffalo when they have no idea what its meaning is.

This was not well researched and it just only adds to the stereotype of our people.
