'I Am Shoni Schimmel!': The All-Everything Native Point Guard Looks to Take It to Tennessee Tonight
Indian country is still celebrating after Shoni Schimmel led the Louisville Cardinals to one of the biggest upsets in the history of the NCAA women's basketball tournament on Sunday, March 31. But the Cardinals, though, are trying to put the euphoria behind them as they prepare to meet the second-seeded Tennessee Lady Volunteers tonight at 9 pm/ET on ESPN (check your local listings).
First, though, is a compelling guest commentary this morning, "Schimmel Schocked the World!," from NDNSports.com's Brent Cahwee and posted online by Native News Network. He writes:
"...apparently not getting the memo that teams are supposed to politely take the ceremonial loss to Baylor, so the NCAA and its sponsors can use Griner in every marketing promo on their march to the Final Four games, were the Louisville Cardinals and Indian country's very own Shoni Schimmel ... In a postgame interview on ESPN, Shoni was asked about her confidence in being able to go at 6' 8" Brittany Griner where she made an acrobatic backward over the head bucket with Griner trying to block the shot. Shoni said:
“It's my mentality to keep going at her. I mean she is Brittany Griner, but I'm Shoni Schimmel so I keep going at her.”
