Lace up your running shoes and head to Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute in Albquerque, New Mexico on June 29 for the Sixth Annual Jim Thorpe Native American 5K Championships. Registration is now open.

The Jim Thorpe Native American 5K is open to all American Indians, Alaska Natives and First Nations peoples of Canada. The day also features the New Mexico 5K Road State Championship, which is open to all USA Track & Field New Mexico-registered particpants. A Community 5K run is open to all. Also being held are a wide variety of other fun, cultural and sports activites and events, including a traditional pueblo throw and an awards ceremony.

This year's Native American championships will be honoring the following extraordinary individuals: Anne Wheelock Gonzales, of the Oneida Tribe of Wisconsin; Steve Gachupin, of the Jemez Pueblo; and Shane Cleveland, USATF New Mexico president and coach of Cougar Track Club of Albuquerque.

This year also features a reunion with Wings of America, a Santa Fe, New Mexico-based program working to improve the lives of American Indian youth through running. The special partnership will recognize the 25 years of Wings of America service.
