Keith Harper Nominated by President Obama for Key Role

On Monday, June 10 President Barack Obama announced his nominations for six key administration posts and two appointments. Among the nominations was that of Keith M. Harper.

Obama has nominated the Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP partner for the United States Representative to the United Nations Human Rights Council, with rank of Ambassador. The position falls under the Department of the State according to a White House press release.

Harper is chair of the law firm’s Native American Practice Group. Harper was part of the team of lawyers who reached the $3.4 billion Cobell settlement.

He serves as a member on the President’s Commission on White House Fellowships. His career includes roles as Senior Staff Attorney for the Native American Rights Fund from 1995 – 2006; Supreme Court Justice on the Supreme Court of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians from 2007 – 2009; and Appellate Justice on the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Court from 1998 – 2001. Harper was an adjunct professor at the Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law. He was also a Professorial Lecturer at the American University Washington College of Law from 1999 – 2001.

Harper served as a Law Clerk to the Honorable Lawrence W. Pierce on the Second Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals according to the release. His career began as a litigation associate with Davis, Polk & Wardwell in New York.

The Cherokee Nation citizen received his B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley and a J.D. from New York University School of Law.

Upon announcing the nominations, President Obama said, “These men and women have demonstrated knowledge and dedication throughout their careers. I am grateful they have chosen to take on these important roles, and I look forward to working with them in the months and years to come.”

Isn't Mr . Harper one of the lawyers who is more than a millionaire secondary to his team's settlement of the COBELL case that was intended to award a fair settlement to many American Indians? Of course, he is.
