Nationalism seems to come forward in the Olympics, but I was just thinking about role models for my granddaughters...and the girls I named up there at the top did not all represent the USA. They were just very good, and very tough, and very disciplined. Admirable, in a word. Or so I believe. The Sac and Fox people (near to whom I grew up) consider Jim Thorpe a hero of their nation even if he did compete under the US flag, and I'm sure some people will disrespect him for having done that. When I think "Olympian," I think individual excellence displayed on a world stage. There was one guy this year competing without a national flag. He is in exile from his country in the US but does not wish to be a US citizen. So they let him compete under the Olympic flag. So be it. Let the runners run, for the sake of the race. Sometimes it ought to be enough to just be excellent.
