A sense of tribal belonging in this day and age is different than what it was over 100 years ago, but I find it problematic that Dina chooses to talk about individualism and the issue of materialism e.g. land. Yes blood quantum is an issue that needs to be resolved within each tribe on there own terms, but what about the fact that I have an oral history of my Native ancestors that tell the story of how I belong to them. Holding on to the story of how I belong and retelling that story provides me a sense of validation with or without a land holding. Non-natives can and do enroll in tribal colleges. The state just doesn't provide funding to the tribal colleges for enrolled non-native students.
