Dear Dina, "the Spanish government is not enthusiastic about it and will not likely be willing to let go without some sort of a fight" is a classic understatement. As far as we can see (and sometimes feel!) it is doing all within its power to abort the process, internally and internationally. The most recent example: the equivalent of the "district attorney" in Catalonia had no sooner uttered the opinion that democracy should allow a referendum to take place legally (this weekend), than steps got underway at Spanish government level to have him promptly replaced!
