One thing I have not yet seen addressed - is it still standard practice for soldiers being deployed into combat to sign over their custodial rights [presumably to the other parent] for the duration of the deployment? If so, then the timing of the adoption paperwork is doubly nefarious and lends greater credence to the father's assertion that he thought he was giving custody to the mother. If a child is in the custody of the other parent, there is still a chance for the relinquishing parent to re-establish relations with the child at a future point. If the child is adopted out, the potential vanishes.
