The recent surge of Governor Perry in the polls should be of great concern to those living in Indian Country, as this article does not directly address, but does imply. Governor Perry has been socialized in a Texas culture that knows little of Indian people, and probably cares less. That indifference is the history of Texas. Professor Gary Clayton Anderson of the University of Oklahoma has written an excellent book, The Conquest of Texas. Professor details the story of what he describes as "ethnic cleansing" in relation to the 19th century history of Indian people in Texas. It is an ugly story involving the actions of Texas Rangers who are, of course, now glorified in the State of Texas. Texas textbooks have only recently, according to professor Andersen, provided a more balanced history of 19th century Texas history and Indian people. To all those Native conservatives out there who may want to support Rick Perry, a word of caution. Think about it. Governor Perry is a product of his education and social upbringing.
