Shame on Clay Jenkinson. The way I see it, is that Clay Jenkinson is not only against a woman getting the Rough Rider Award, but against Native American's altogether. If it wasn't for Sakakawea, the Lewis and Clark Expedition could have ended up a total disaster. Lewis and Clark may have not made it to the west coast let alone back. Sakakawea made that trip possible and paved the way for Lewis and Clark to interact with various tribes along the way. She showed courage above and beyond what could possibly have been expected for a woman of her day and of today if thrust into her position. I have always admired Sakakawea and think she should win the Rough Rider Award. I am part Cherokee and only found that out recently, but have been proud to know there is blood from our Indigenous people flowing in my blood. Sakakawea must be a woman remembered by all generations and races, enthnicities in our country. Her contributions have been immense. She, to me, is the spirit of North Dakota and I'm from Ohio. Monique Vondall-Rieke, you have written a wonderful article and I thank you for it.
