I remember listening to my adoptive mother speaking Yugoslavian to her relatives and my adoptive father speaking Spanish to his relatives. I'd sit there not knowing either language and feeling so isolated and disconnected. I didn't even know my own ethnicity. It is inhumane to strip human beings of their original identities.
