Thousands of spectators, many wearing flowered lei, feathered headdresses and traditional attire, and others carrying banners and flags assembled at Piazza San Pietro as Pope Benedict XVI presided over a special mass to name seven new saints at the Vatican on October 21.

Kateri Tekakwitha, Mohawk, also known as “Lilly of the Mohawks,” became the first American Indian canonized and the ceremony was celebrated by many American Indians in attendance.

These pictures share the celebration in the honor of Saint Kateri.
