A Photographic Tour of the Horse Parade at the Julyamsh Pow Wow
The Coeur d’Alene Tribe’s annual Julyamsh Pow Wow always honors the horse with a horse parade which precedes each grand entry. The horse has long been important to the tribe. Just a mile from the pow wow grounds sits the infamous location where the U.S. Army shot and killed about 1000 Indian horses to reduce the ability of the tribe to move about and to reach its hunting grounds. The horse parade reminds everyone of the history of “our brother the horse.” Winners are selected from the riders for their regalia and the regalia of their horses.
These photos showcase the horse parade in all its glory.
