A Pow Wow to Remember: 2013 American Indian Society Inaugural Pow Wow
Well over a thousand people made their way to Washington, D.C. on Saturday and made an intentional stop in on the American Indian Society’s 12th Inaugural Pow Wow. The AIS Pow Wow took place at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington Virginia, same place the AIS Inaugural Ball would be held on Sunday, in unison with the celebrations held in honor of President Barack Obama’s inauguration as the 44th president of the United States.
In 1969 the AIS held its first Inaugural Ball, forming a parade unit that marched in the Presidential inauguration of Richard Nixon. The AIS Ball and Pow Wow has been held every inauguration since.
During the pow wow, dancers from a wide range of nations came to celebrate in the festivities that included a gourd dance, round dance, and more. Special performances were made by the award-winning group, The Zotigh Singers and the championship Northern-style drum group, The Boyz.
The Inaugural Pow Wow Chairman was Preston Tone-Pah-Hote, Jr., (Kiowa), the pow wow advisor Preston E. Tone-Pah-Hote, Sr., the arena directors were Darryl Swift (Hidatsa/Lakota) and Kevin Tarrant (Winnebego/HoChunk), the Master of Ceremonies was Vernon "CY" Ahtone (Kiowa), the Head Male dancer was Charles Belisle, Head Female Sara Loft with junior dancers Preston "Buddy" Tone-Pah-Hote, III and Alexis Wasee Hill.
