Kit Carson was a young kid on the Santa Fe Trail, a fur trapper and a scout for John C. Fremont in the Rocky Mountains. In military activities in the West during the Civil War, Carson served as a colonel in the New Mexico Territory under General James H. Carleton in a campaign to stop Navajo raids and to move the tribe to a new area.
