The U.S. government's forcible removals of American Indian tribes during the 1800s ultimately generated unwavering pride among indigenous people, several local Native Americans said. "Even though we have been... less fortunate through our plight by the United States government, we are still here as native people," said Eugene Cameron, whose tribe was effectively split between Nebraska and Oklahoma because of the removal efforts. "We are still proud to be indigenous people."
